‘An Introduction To LOA Records’ is the first compilation from the new independent label owned by producer & composer Adam Gibbons (Lack of Afro). Committed to an eclectic roster of diverse artists, the label was founded with a wide open music policy – to simply release quality music, completely unrestrained by genre or style and free from the sort of commercial pressures that can be associated with major label dealings.

No more is the open music policy in evidence than in this introduction to the label…

Lack of Afro himself kicks things off with a soulful nod towards The Menahan Street Band in ‘The Love You Gave’ - a down-home, horn-led instrumental that’s smothered in rich analogue warmth and which is his first new track since 2014’s much acclaimed album ‘Music For Adverts’.

Virginia based producer EOM keeps it soulful but hits hard with ‘Sweet Nothings’, a beautiful string-heavy beat of which his hero J Dilla would’ve been proud.

25 year-old soul sensation Elliott Cole is reminiscent of early Mayer Hawthorne on ‘Lost In A Friend’s Eye’, a wistful recollection on days gone by that features a beautiful Hammond organ solo by regular Lack of Afro collaborator George Cooper.

Souls of Gama are Glenn Fallows (The Impellers) & Eugene MacDonald (Guests of Nature). Blending folk, soul and dub to great effect on ‘Soul City’, MacDonald’s voice soars above it all. Best enjoyed on a sunny evening…

Taken from the forthcoming album ‘Bristol Fashon’, Junior Oliver (& The Unity Sextet) give us ‘Cachaoito’ - an up-tempo samba, montuno & latin banger featuring Cooper on piano and also Jamie Cullum band member Rory Simmons on the trumpet.

The Adam Coopers are a duo comprising of Adam Gibbons and George Cooper (see what they did there?). Playing all the instruments between them, a vintage soul jazz flavour (reminiscent of the Googie Rene Combo) combines with a catchy melody to create ‘A Month Of Summers’.

There's a sense of musician comradery, a brotherhood, better yet when the bass player gets run to run the meet. Egos are put aside (as there's no shlappin da bass) through clean solos trading between the members. Hard to beat Fat Thumbs, but it's just as cool. Dr. Beaf
